Commercial solar installation in Toowoomba and the Darling Downs
Toowoomba and Darling Downs enquiries need the actual meter and network information from the start. Do not carry a Brisbane tariff or connection assumption into a regional commercial or processing site.
Vitalic delivers commercial and industrial energy systems Australia-wide, bringing solar, battery storage and control into one site assessment.

Identify the network from the connection
The Australian Energy Regulator lists Ergon Energy Network as the distributor for country and regional Queensland, and Ergon’s own planning material covers Toowoomba. Near the range the boundary with Energex matters, so confirm the distributor and tariff from the bill and connection details rather than from the town name. Separate energy charges from demand and supply charges so the model tests the cost that solar, storage or scheduling can change.
Account for process timing and recovery
For a site with pumping, refrigeration or processing equipment, record the production schedule and any seasonal changes. Motor starts, batch cycles and restart requirements may govern a demand peak. Check whether shifting work is operationally acceptable before valuing it as flexibility; the site operator needs a clear ability to stop a trial.
Separate bill reduction from backup
If resilience is an objective, identify the essential circuits, starting loads and required duration. A grid-connected battery does not automatically provide backup to the whole property. Assess isolation, controls and any existing generator as a distinct design requirement, alongside solar self-consumption and demand management.
Pricing zones and life on the range
The whole Toowoomba Regional Council area is in Ergon’s East pricing zone, but parts of the Western Downs outside Dalby and Wambo, and Ergon’s area of Goondiwindi, are in the West zone, where the distribution charges differ; the site’s network connection decides which applies. Ergon plans its network jointly with Energex near Toowoomba. Toowoomba Airport sits at 641 m, averages 4.9 days a year at 2 °C or below and 740.1 mm of rain, the lowest of our Queensland cities, so check the profile for a winter-morning heating load on the range.
Finance for farms and processors
Queensland has no state rebate for business solar, but primary producers can borrow up to $1.3 million over up to 20 years, with no fees, through QRIDA’s Sustainability Loan, which names solar, refrigeration, lighting and pumps. Ergon’s Solar Pump Program offers cashback for some pump-only connections at the end of a powerline that move to solar and give up the grid connection. The Queensland Competition Authority puts network costs at around 60 to 65 per cent of a regional large customer’s total retail cost, which is the part that demand management and batteries act on.
Commercial solar in Toowoomba: common questions
What is the government rebate on a 100 kW solar system in Toowoomba?
The federal incentive is small-scale technology certificates (STCs), which installers usually take as an upfront discount. For the example postcode 4350 (Toowoomba City, Zone 3), a new 100 kW system installed in 2026 creates 691 STCs (100 kW × 1.382 × 5 years). At the Clean Energy Regulator’s reported spot price of $39.85 that is about $27,500. This is a postcode example, not a site eligibility check. Confirm your own site’s postcode and eligibility. The figure for a 100 kW system falls each year as the scheme approaches its 2030 end.
Is Toowoomba on Energex or Ergon Energy?
Regional Queensland, including Toowoomba, is served by Ergon Energy Network. Some sites near the range may sit on a different network, so check the distributor named on the bill.
What STC zone is Toowoomba in?
Toowoomba (postcode 4350) is Zone 3 under the 2019 zone-ratings instrument, with a rating of 1.382, the same as Brisbane.
Will a battery keep a processing site running in an outage?
Only if it is designed for that. Backup needs the essential circuits isolated, the starting loads and duration specified, and the controls set up for islanding. A battery designed only to cut demand charges will not do it by default.

Is there a Queensland rebate for business solar in Toowoomba?
Not in October 2026. The Queensland Government’s QBEST rebates are no longer offered, and no state program funds solar or batteries for a general commercial site. Sector programs are open: free ecoBiz coaching, a subsidised energy benchmark for manufacturers, and QRIDA’s Sustainability Loan for primary producers, which names solar. The federal certificates still apply.
Can a Toowoomba business claim certificates on a system larger than 100 kW?
From 1 October 2026, new solar systems above 100 kW and up to 1 MW can create small-scale technology certificates (STCs), with a fixed deeming period to 2030. The Clean Energy Regulator says applications for these systems open in mid to late November 2026, and evidence of network connection approval is required. Only capacity installed on or after 1 October 2026 is eligible, so an extension earns certificates on the added panels only.

* Illustrative. Output is modelled with PVGIS 5.3, EU Joint Research Centre for 1 kW laid flat, 14% system losses and 2005–2023 weather; a real system depends on its roof, shading and equipment. Panels tilted 29° to the north would give the most generation, about 11% more (1,574 kWh per kW), but need frames that usually cost more than the extra output earns. Solar exposure is the Bureau of Meteorology’s long-term station mean. The 100 kW certificate example uses postcode 4350, its statutory zone rating and 5 deeming years, with the count rounded down. The displayed value is floored to $100 at the Clean Energy Regulator’s reported spot price; installers usually take certificates as an upfront discount. A site’s postcode and eligibility require confirmation.
